Conifer encroachment increases foliar moisture content in a northwestern California oak woodland

نویسندگان

چکیده

Background Foliar moisture content influences crown fire ignition and behaviour. Some spatial variation in foliar is attributable to differences stand conditions but evidence describing this role lacking or contradicting. Aims To examine the of on tree physiology Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Methods We monitored both species, (stomatal conductance leaf water potential) oak, across three conditions, including intact stands (unencroached), invaded by (encroached), thinned with removed. Key results Encroached had higher than stands. Higher density was associated species foliage ages. also midday potential compared Conclusions These findings provide strong that thinning treatments can influence ecosystems, likely implications for other ecosystems. Implications Better understanding may contribute improved temporal prediction modelling

Seasonal and Site Effects on Oak Fine Root Production and Ectomycorrhizal Colonization in California Oak Woodland

At three sites in a blue oak woodland in northeast California, we studied seasonal patterns of blue oak (Quercus douglasii Hook and Arn.) fine root (< 2 mm diameter) production and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) colonization using root ingrowth cores. In a short-term study, ingrowth cores were installed and harvested in 3-month intervals for one year. Oak fine root production was lower in fall and winte...

Potential Effects of Sudden Oak Death on the Oak Woodland Bird Community of Coastal California

Oak-dependent birds are expected to suffer severe population declines as a result of sudden oak death (SOD). We investigated how the disappearance of two highly SOD-sensitive tree species, tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus) and coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), may in turn affect levels of bird species richness, diversity, and equitability in coastal oak habitats of California. Combining avian ...

Covariance Patterns Among Birds and Vegetation in a California Oak Woodland

We sampled characteristics of vegetation and estimated abundances of bird species on 23 plots representing a continuum of tree densities of the blue oak phase of the Coast Range foothill woodland near Hopland, California. Fifty-one bird species were found breeding. Cavity-nesters dominated the bird community in number of species and individuals. Cavitynesters used a variety of tree species for ...

Initial response of conifer and California black oak seedlings following fuel reduction activities in a Sierra Nevada mixed conifer forest

Forest structure, fuel characteristics, and fire regimes of mixed conifer forests in the Western United States (US) have been dramatically altered since the early 20th century. Fuel treatments have been suggested as a means to limit the size and intensity of wildfires but few experiments are available to analyze the ecological effects of different treatments. The objective of this study is to d...

Ecological Complementarity of Three Sympatric Parids in a California Oak Woodland

Differences in the ecological distributions of the Nearctic and Palearctic species of Parus strongly imply that North American species have differentiated from each other more recently than have the European members of the genus (Snow 1954, Lack 1969). The European species show such fine ecological differences that as many as five or six species may be found together ( Lack 1971) . The species ...
